Debating attitudes, asylum and migration policies

The Karl Polanyi Center for Global Social Studies kindly hosts the Mercator Dialogue on Asylum and Migration (MEDAM) to launch its 2018 Assessment Report on Asylum and Migration Policies in Europe at Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary. The report launch will be followed by a panel discussion on public attitudes towards migration.

 The EU faces major challenges in asylum and migration policy: reorganizing the EU asylum system, securing the external border, curbing irregular immigration through cooperation with African governments, and supporting developing countries that host large numbers of asylum seekers. However, EU member states are affected by immigration in different ways and the attitudes of policy makers and voters toward migration vary widely – posing a formidable challenge to developing policy proposals to overcome the EU’s asylum and immigration impasse.

 MEDAM’s 2018 assessment report proposes a comprehensive strategy for EU asylum and immigration policies, based on the concept of flexible solidarity between EU member states. The presentation of the report’s core messages will be followed by comments of former EU commissioner László Andor (Head of Economic Policy Department, Corvinus University of Budapest) and Prem Kumar Rajaram (Associate Professor, CEU Sociology and Social Anthropology, Head of the Open Learning Initiative).

 Subsequently, a panel discussion will be devoted to examining the key factors in shaping public attitudes toward immigration. The panel will feature Béla Janky (HAS, Institute for Sociology), Bori Simonovits (TÁRKI), Tobias Stöhr (Kiel Institute for the World Economy), Kiss Tamás (Institute of Minorities, Cluj-Napoca) and Attila Melegh (Corvinus University of Budapest).

 The discussion will be followed by a reception.
